Dear NSBE-HAE member,
NSBE-HAE has a high demand for PCI tutors! PCI tutors could dedicate as little as 2 hours a month to help tutor minority students in the Houston area. Subjects include Algebra, Trig, Calculus, Sciences, as well as SAT and ACT prep. We can help increase the interest of these kids in Maths and Science. “Yes we can”!
Our next tutoring session will be held on Saturday April 18th from 4pm to 6pm. The location is 9815 Grant Road , Houston, TX 77070. You are welcome to just show up.

NSBE and Afripro are teaming up for a event where you can prepare a speech, present it to the audience, then be critiqued on your presentation. It is kind of like toast masters. Public speaking and presentations are such a large part of our professional lives and we need to develop our skills. The winner will receive a $100. This event will be held on Saturday May 2nd from 12 to 4pm. Food will be provided. Please RSVP to chair@nsbe-hae.org

The term of the current Executive Board of the National Society of Black Engineers-Houston Alumni Extension (NSBE-HAE) is coming to an end. This gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your leadership skills. The positions for which elections are conducted are:
- Chair
- Vice-Chair
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Programs Chair

The 2009 Scholarship Awards Luncheon will be on April 11, 11:30-1:30pm. This luncheon will honor those who applied and won our 2009 scholarships. Please come our and support us as we recognize those that won. The tickets are $30 each. Please purchase tickets for the NSBE-HAE Scholarship Awards Banquet at the general body meeting. Our next General Body Meeting will take place on March 17, 2009 at 6:30pm at United Way.
Our Speaker for the evening will be a Financial Planner, Maica D. Walker, from Ameriprise Financial Services. Maica received a degree in Finance from University of Houston and is now a Certified Senior Advisor at Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc.
She will speak on financial planning for retirement, education, wealth preservation, and estate planning. This will be a great opportunity for the NSBE-HAE members to learn more about increasing their savings, planning for the future, and sustaining a living even in a tough economy.

The workshop will be at SHAPE (3903 Almeda). Here’s the schedule (8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. each day):
March 7: Registration, Writing/Verbal
March 14: Math
March 21: Practice test, wrap-up, pizza party???
The kids are grades 10 - 12 (ages 15 - 17 or 18).
It sounds like AfriPRO will be able to provide teachers for the 14th and the 21st, so I mostly would like help this coming Saturday, if you have anyone available. I’ll send out complete instructions to the volunteers before Saturday. All they’ll have to do is follow the instructions. They will hopefully be working in groups of 8 - 10 students for each 2 teachers.
